From Seasonal Gifting to Daily Ritual – The Consumer Behavior Revolution

August 04, 2026

Consumer behavior in the candle market is undergoing a fundamental transformation, with candles evolving from seasonal gifts and decorative accents into everyday lifestyle essentials. According to Mordor Intelligence, the candles market has surpassed a key inflection point, with home fragrance evolving from a discretionary household purchase into a recurring lifestyle category. Consumers are increasingly incorporating candles into their daily routines, driving more consistent replenishment cycles and reducing demand volatility associated with traditional holiday-driven sales peaks.

This shift is reflected in the remarkable scale of retail events. During Bath & Body Works' 14th Annual Candle Day in December 2025, the company featured over 180 candle variants at a promotional price of USD 9.95 across both retail and e-commerce channels. The scale and success of this event underscore the ability of mature markets to sustain high purchase frequency when supported by broad product assortments and strategically timed promotions. As a result, the candles market benefits from a more resilient demand profile, characterized by stronger repeat-purchase behavior and reduced dependence on seasonal sales surges.

The wellness and self-care movement has further accelerated this behavioral shift. Scented candles have migrated into functional wellness routines, occupying a role previously reserved for spa settings and professional therapies. The association between ambient fragrance and stress modulation has driven brands to extend scent portfolios across adjacent categories. German consumer trend coverage from autumn 2025 documented a consumer pivot away from overpowering seasonal scents toward nuanced, therapeutic fragrance profiles – lightly smoky cedarwood, amber, and gourmand accords – reflecting a preference for candles that actively support stress relief rather than simply mark a season.

The rising focus on home decor is another powerful driver. In 2024, Opendoor Technologies Inc. reported that Americans spend USD 1,598 annually on home decor, with Millennials spending 23 percent more than Baby Boomers, reflecting their stronger focus on style and personalization. The growing interest in home decor is fueling the expansion of the candle market. Candles have evolved beyond their traditional functional role to become a key element of home décor and atmosphere enhancement, delivering both visual appeal and sensory experiences. This unique positioning enables candles to occupy a space between decorative and functional household products, supporting consistent demand even in periods of cautious consumer spending. Compared with many discretionary home accessories, candles offer an accessible way for consumers to refresh and elevate their living spaces, reinforcing their appeal as an affordable lifestyle enhancement product.

For candle manufacturers, understanding this behavioral evolution is critical. Brands that can position their products as daily wellness rituals rather than occasional indulgences, and that can build recurring purchase relationships through subscription models or loyalty programs, will capture the growing segment of consumers for whom candles have become an essential part of everyday life.
