The Scents of 2026 – How Fragrance Preferences Are Evolving

August 26, 2026

The scented candle market, valued at USD 3.49 billion in 2025, is estimated to grow to USD 5.25 billion by 2031, driven by evolving consumer preferences that are reshaping fragrance trends. Scented candles are forecast to register the highest CAGR of 7.21% through 2031, making them the fastest-expanding segment in the home fragrances industry. The market has moved beyond a narrow décor niche and is now tied to everyday household fragrance use in many mature consumer markets.

Consumer demand for wellness-oriented fragrances continues to dominate. Fragrances that are calming and help customers refocus are often top-selling, with citrus, eucalyptus, and lavender leading the category. Nine out of ten candle users will use a candle to help make their space feel comfortable, driving demand for relaxing scents. The rising interest in aromatherapy products and the expansion of premium candle designs are major trends shaping the forecast period.

Scent variability remains a dominant consumer buying consideration. Today, there are more than 10,000 fragrances available for purchase in the United States, and consumers increasingly gravitate toward personalized fragrance experiences. Major trends include growing demand for natural and soy-based candles, rising popularity of aromatherapy products, and increasing customization of fragrance blends.

The premiumization trend is further amplifying fragrance innovation. The global luxury candle market was estimated at USD 667.9 million in 2025 and is expected to reach USD 1,525.2 million by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 10.8%. Premium fragrance integration, eco-friendly and biodegradable materials, and customizable candles are key trends driving the forecast period.

For candle manufacturers, staying ahead of fragrance trends requires investment in scent research, consumer insight, and formulation flexibility. Brands that can deliver complex, layered fragrance profiles—moving beyond single-note scents to curated olfactory experiences—will capture the growing premium segment. The shift toward purpose-driven aromatics that promise relaxation, focus, or restorative sleep is influencing formulation choices and marketing language. Manufacturers that can combine sensory excellence with authentic storytelling about ingredients and sourcing will build lasting competitive advantage in an increasingly sophisticated market.
