The Client: NexGen Solutions – a Tel Aviv‑based cybersecurity firm with 350 employees in an open‑plan office. Their HR manager, Yael Cohen, introduced candles in breakout areas to create a “calm, focused atmosphere.” But within 2 weeks, the office fire alarm triggered 3 times – each time due to smoke from burning candles. The Pain Point: Yael’s previous supplier (a local artisan) used paraffin wax and a large single wick – producing visible smoke and particulate matter that sensitive office smoke detectors (with laser sensors) interpreted as a fire. Our Solution: We developed our Office‑Safe™ Series – a candle engineered for indoor spaces with sensitive detectors.
Zero‑Smoke Wax: We used a high‑purity food‑grade paraffin (99.9% pure) blended with 20% beeswax – both have very low carbon residue. We added a combustion modifier (a trace of magnesium stearate) that promotes complete oxidation, reducing visible smoke to near zero.
Air‑Flow Wick: Instead of a traditional cotton wick, we used a flat‑braid, zinc‑core wick – the zinc stiffens the wick, keeping it upright and centred, while the braid creates a uniform flame that draws air evenly. This reduces flickering, which is a major cause of incomplete combustion.
Burn Chamber Testing: We burned our samples in a sealed chamber with a laser particle counter (similar to office smoke detectors). Our result: 0.02mg/m³ – below the detector’s 0.5mg/m³ threshold. Standard candles measured 1.8mg/m³.
The Process:
Week 1 – Inquiry (September 2): Yael sent us a video of her office alarm going off. “Please – fix this.”
Week 2 – Sample Proposal: We shipped 10 candles from our Office‑Safe line, along with a particle‑level report.
Week 3 – Office Trial: Yael placed 3 candles in different break areas and burned them for 6 consecutive hours. The alarm stayed silent. Employees reported “no smell, no haze.”
Week 4 – Order: 350 candles – one for every desk – in a single scent (lemongrass & ginger, known for focus).
Production: We ran the order in 6 days, with an extra quality step – every 50th candle was burn‑tested in our chamber.
