The Rise of the Male Candle Consumer – A 35% Growth Story

September 17, 2026

The candle industry is experiencing a significant demographic shift, with male consumers emerging as one of the fastest-growing customer segments. Industry data indicates that more men are using candles than ever before, representing a 35% increase in male candle purchases over the past five years. This trend reflects broader changes in masculine identity, wellness culture, and the normalization of self-care among men.

The shift is evident across markets. In Mexico, there is a growing popularity of scented candles among men, with companies focusing on incorporating masculine scents into their products, including leather and other traditionally masculine fragrance notes. In China, however, male consumers still represent only 23% of the candle market, with 38% of male respondents indicating they "want to buy but don't know where to start". This gap between interest and purchasing suggests significant untapped potential in the male consumer segment.

Several factors are driving the growth of male candle consumption. The wellness and self-care movement has encouraged men to embrace products traditionally associated with women, including candles, skincare, and home fragrances. The rise of "metrosexual" and "lumbersexual" aesthetics has normalized male interest in grooming, home décor, and lifestyle products. Social media platforms have also played a role, with male influencers and content creators featuring candles in their content. The COVID-19 pandemic, which kept people at home and heightened focus on home environments, further accelerated this trend.

Fragrance preferences among male consumers tend to differ from female consumers. Men often gravitate toward woody, musky, and leather-based scents, as well as fresher, cleaner profiles like citrus and oceanic notes. Brands have responded by developing gender-neutral or masculine-focused candle lines, with packaging and marketing designed to appeal to male aesthetics.

For candle manufacturers, the growing male consumer segment represents a significant opportunity. Manufacturers can develop product lines specifically targeting male consumers—with fragrance profiles, packaging designs, and marketing messages tailored to male preferences. The key is to avoid stereotypes and instead focus on authenticity and quality. Brands that can successfully engage male consumers will capture a growing share of the market while diversifying their customer base.
