The Generational Divide – How Different Ages Buy Candles Differently

August 17, 2026

The candle market is remarkably universal in its appeal, yet the motivations and preferences of consumers vary significantly across generations. Understanding these differences is essential for manufacturers seeking to develop targeted products, marketing messages, and distribution strategies.

Gen Z and younger Millennials, aged 18 to 34, often buy candles as décor accents and self-care items. They gravitate toward trend-forward scents, seasonal launches, and visually appealing packaging. Common purchase occasions include birthdays, housewarmings, and personal treats. This demographic is particularly drawn to candles that are photogenic and shareable on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where influencer partnerships and user-generated content have amplified brand awareness. They also strongly associate candle burning with mindfulness and relaxation therapy.

Older Millennials and Gen X, aged 35 to 54, frequently purchase candles as hostess gifts, thank-you gestures, and holiday presents. They value burn time, fragrance throw, and trusted brands that align with their personal style. This demographic is more brand-loyal and less driven by novelty, preferring reliable performance and familiar scent profiles over experimental launches.

Baby Boomers, aged 55 and above, appreciate candles for their calming qualities and timeless appeal. They choose classic scents and premium packaging for thoughtful, elegant gifts tied to traditions and special occasions. For this generation, candles are associated with relaxation, nostalgia, and the comfort of familiar rituals.

The data confirms the broad appeal of candles across generations. According to industry research, 76% of consumers view candles as ideal holiday gifts and 74% consider them perfect for housewarming gifts. The rising popularity of scented and artisanal candles, especially among Millennials and Gen Z consumers, is fueling market growth, driven by increased disposable incomes, the influence of gifting culture, and eco-conscious preferences for soy-based and natural wax products. Organic and natural candle sales are particularly fueled by Millennials and Gen Z.

For candle manufacturers, the generational divide presents both challenges and opportunities. A one-size-fits-all approach is no longer sufficient. Brands must develop product lines and marketing strategies that speak to each generation's unique motivations—whether that means Instagram-worthy packaging for Gen Z, trusted quality and performance for Gen X, or timeless elegance for Baby Boomers. The most successful brands will be those that can bridge these generational preferences while maintaining a coherent brand identity.
